Village of Hope
The Village of Hope was born out of consultation with Link Ministries and HOPE: Global to address a major need in the community for safe and secure housing for widows. Link Ministries is a local Rwandan Christian organisation committed to the rebuilding of Rwanda after the tragic genocide of 1994. Their major goals are: healing, reconciliation and holistic community transformation. We have been so happy to partner with Link Ministries and to have achieved so much together since 2006.
The Village of Hope has now reached a place of sustainability and we have been blessed by the incredible testimony and progress of the widows and orphans. Through the work and support of many, achievements over the years have included:
The building of 30 houses, 26 of which are occupied with 1 being used as the Community Centre
Each home with 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, living area and bathroom
Electricity installed for all homes
Water tanks installed for all homes plus water tanks for the cow shed
A successful cow scheme with 26 cows who are all providing milk and calves for consumption, sales and stock increase
Training in Health & First Aid, IT, English, Literacy, Crafts & Child Protection
The employment of locals in constructing the houses
Flourishing vegetable gardens tended to by the widows and their children
The building of an Internet Cafe
We have seen many teams of volunteers head over to the Village of Hope year upon year to assist, including two NRL trips with the Parramatta Eels. During this time, the Village has also been visited by government officials, including Special Envoy to the former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Bob McMullen, who praised the Village of Hope as a local working example of Australian-Rwandan partnership and made comment on the high standard of the houses.
A special thank you to the many teams of volunteers and donors who have supported this project, in particular BHP Biliton through their matched giving program. We and Link Ministries are forever grateful for the many hands and hearts that have contributed to improving the lives of these widows and orphans. It has been a truly remarkable journey.
