Why walking is good for you!

In this day and age, most of us are probably sitting down at a computer, tablet or some other smart device to read this blog. Research shows that the on average, people working in office desks spend over 30 hours per week sitting, excluding travel to and from work. Research also shows that only 1 in 5 adults reach the recommended 10,000 steps per day. For this reason and in the spirit of launching our Walk of Hope fundraiser earlier this week, we wanted to share with you some of the many benefits of walking.

1. Walking is a form of stress-free exercise! Walking and any exercise at that is known for reducing stress and tension throughout the body. This is because it increases blood flow throughout the body and brain which in turn release potent chemicals that relieve pain and stimulate relaxation.

2. Walks help to improve your immune system! Those who go on regular long walks find that they tend to use less medication, they have less chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes, and it also helps those who suffer with asthma due to the increased lung function.

3. Walking actually gives you energy and makes you happy! Brisk walks are the best natural energisers because they boost circulation and increase oxygen supply to your body. Walking eases muscle tension and wakes up stiff joints so that you feel less tired and lazy, plus it releases good endorphins in to your bloodstream, which reduces stress and anxiety levels.

4. Walking is a form of weight-bearing exercise, which means that you are carrying your own body weight. This exercise helps with increasing your cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness, muscular pain, stiffness, Diabetes, high cholesterol, management of hypertension, strong bones, improved balance, increased muscle strength, and reduced body fat!

Walking has such incredible benefits for our bodies! The best thing about it is, that anyone can do it, with or without other people and at your own pace. All you need is comfortable shoes and making a bit of time for it. You'll be surprised to see how quickly these benefits unfold for you!

Who wouldn't want the above benefits?! Plus, by taking part in the HOPE: Global Walk of Hope - you are not only doing your mind and body good, but you're actually doing good for those around the world in need!
